The correct way how to add Skills when you generate a hero!

Okay. Let's find out how to generate a character basing on the Game Mechanic of MYFAROG v.2.7. It's about a 'Stamina' Skill and other Skills issues.


Hey! I already posted my thoughts how our characters obtain Skills during a generation. Check that topic here 👉 'You CAN'T obtain new Skills when you play MYFAROG!'. So, I was wrong with that way of generation. I thought it over one more time and I'd like to present you a new method that I discovered not so long time ago. I think it could be interesting for you.


I. PRE-CHARACTER

Let's generate a pre-character. A pre-character doesn't have any Character Role at all.

1) Page 5. Step 1. A Species + A Race:

i. It's 17 on 3D6. A Thulêan.

ii. It's 13 on 3D6. A Native.


2) Step 2. A gender is male.


3) Page 8. Step 3 and Step 4. Attributes (A male Thulêan Native has +0 for every Racial Modification):

i. It's 11 and 13 on 3D6. CHA = 13/Cha = +1

ii. It's 10 and 13 on 3D6. CON = 13/Con = +1

iii. It's 14 and 11 on 3D6. DEX = 14/Dex = +1

iv. It's 9 and 10 on 3D6. INT = 10/Int = +0

v. It's 13 and 10 on 3D6. STR = 13/Str = +1

vi. It's 10 and 10 on 3D6. WIL = 10/Wil = +0


4) Page 8. Step 5 and Step 6. A Height + Weight and Size:

i. It's 15 on 4D6. 58 + 4D6''. 58 + 15 = 73'' (1 inch = 2.46 cm. Page 64.)

ii. It's 8 on 4D6. 4D6 * 3 + (Str * 10) + 40. 8 * 3 + (+1 * 10) + 40 = 74; 73'' + 74 = 147 bowl-pounds (1 bowl-pound = 0.5 kg. Page 64.)

ii. A size of pre-character based on his weight is +0 (Medium). (Page 9)


5) Step 7. A Social Class:

For Example, he's Noble.


6) Pages 12 and 13. Step 8 and Step 9. A birthplace + A Life Stance:

i. It's 14 on D20. It means Trôskenia ("Tower Gate").

ii. It's 4 on D6. It means he has the Âsatrû Life Stance.


7) Step 10. A Cultural Background:

He was born in Trôskenia. I have to choose two Skills from an 'Acting', 'Social Skills', 'World Lore' basing on his birthplace.

I picked 'Social Skills', a 'World Lore'.


8) Step 11. A Tribe Name. I skipped this step, because I try to show you what happens with exact Skills only.


9) Step 12. I skipped all other unnecessary steps which are beyond this topic.


10) Page 14. Step 13. Talents:
I can choose 1 Talent without a prerequisite. My choice is 🤬 'Aggressive' +1 Initiative.

11) Page 16. Step 14. A Character Role. Here is most interesting things ☝️

For example, my favourite Deity is Skanþan. Note there is no words in the text I have some Skills by default. Including a 'Perception', 'Dodging', 'Tempo'. But if we check out the page 21, we'll see that a 'Perception', 'Dodging', 'Tempo' are not applicable (n/a). I suppose I can mark these a 'Perception', 'Dodging', 'Tempo' as are by default for my pre-character. Okay.

Next, I try to understand which a Character Role suits to my Attributes. I think I'd like to be a Trickster to do business with the Trickster circle.

The Trickster Character Role requires an equality with or a number more than 9 CHA, 9 DEX, 9 INT for both genders. My CHA, DEX, INT are 13, 14, 10 and I'm male. Well done.

Let's check the page 21 again. There is which Skills I have as a Trickster. Skills are Trained.

I have Skills as a Trickster:
i. 'Acrobatics'
ii. 'Acting'
iii. 'Climbing'
iv. 'Mechanics'
v. 'Social Skills'
vi. 'Stealth'
vii. 'Trickery'

I remember that I picked 'Social Skills', a 'World Lore' as two Trained Skills, because of the birthplace. I have two the same Skills, but I can't have two the same Skills in the same time (the page 13). I just replace 'Social Skills' of my first choice by 'Social Skills' of the Trickster Character Role.

TOTAL:

I have these Skills presently:

i. 'Dodging' (n/a (by default)
ii. 'Tempo' (n/a (by default)
iii. 'Perception' (n/a (by default)
iv. 'World Lore' (Trained based on a Cultural Background)
v. 'Acrobatics' (Trained based on the Trickster Character Role)
vii. 'Acting' (Trained based on the Trickster Character Role)
viii. 'Climbing' (Trained based on the Trickster Character Role)
ix. 'Mechanics' (Trained based on the Trickster Character Role)
x. 'Social Skills' (Trained based on the Trickster Character Role)
xi. 'Stealth' (Trained based on the Trickster Character Role)
xii. 'Trickery' (Trained based on the Trickster Character Role)

12 Trained Skills. Now, it's not a pre-character, but a complete Trickster character.

From now I can't add Skills in my Skills Set with a reason I just want it. My Skill Set is completed. Other new Skills I can add only when I reach new experienced Levels and those new Skills will be Untrained for me.

Now, look... I don't have a 'Stamina' Skill! I couldn't pick a 'Stamina' based on my birthplace, because there is no 'Stamina' for people from Trôskenia. Also, a 'Stamina' is absent in the Skill Set of Trickster! It means when a game is started for me then my character will be exhausted just IMMIDIATELY. It'll happen to my character, because he has no Stamina Points. I need to add a 'Stamina', when I'll reach a New Level, but I can't move, because my character is exhausted permanently. What the hell is it? Moreover, I DON'T HAVE a 'Melee' Skill!!!! I'm not able to use even a knife to protect myself. Even though, I have a 'Melee' Skill' I'm not able to use it anyway, because I'm always exhausted. How to solve this problem? 🤔

SOLUTION. 

II. A CIVILIAN

Well, the second way. Let's generate exact a Civilian character. A pre-character doesn't have any Character Role at all, but in this case we generate a Civilian character at the beginning. Why? Because a Civilian Character Role give us an option to pick any 4 Trained Skills more! Yes, you can do it. Because if you check the page 16, you'll see that a Civilian Character Role doesn't require any prerequisites (n/a). It means that your character can be a Civilian instantly even before he/she acquires Attributes! After every step, we'll just convert a Civilian Character into a None-Civilian character. In this way we manage to add more Skills to our hero. Let's do it.

I started the same first generation anew, but from step 10.

7) Page 13. Step 10. A Cultural Background:

He was born in Trôskenia. I have to choose two Skills from 'Acting', 'Social Skills', 'World Lore' basing on his birthplace.

I picked 'Social Skills', 'World Lore'.

8) Step 11. A Tribe Name. I skipped this step, because I try to show you what happens with exact Skills only.


9) Step 12. I skipped all other unnecessary steps which are beyond this topic.


10) Step 13. Talents:

11) Step 14. A Character Role. So, it isn't a pre-character as I typed about it above, but a Civilian character. It means I can choose 4 more Trained Skills (the page 21).

My choice is the same. I want to be a Trickster, but while I'm a Civilian I do my choice with Skills. First of all, I remember I crucially need a 'STAMINA' and a 'Melee'!!

I picked next four Skills as a Civilian: 

i. 'Stamina'!
ii. 'Melee'!
iii. 'Religious Tradition'
iv. 'Riding'

Now, let's convert a Civilian character into a Trickster character.

I have Skills as a Trickster:

i. 'Acrobatics'
ii. 'Acting'
iii. 'Climbing'
iv. 'Mechanics'
v. 'Social Skills'
vi. 'Stealth'
vii. 'Trickery'

I remember that I picked 'Social Skills', a 'World Lore' as two Trained Skills, because of the birthplace. I have two the same Skills, but I can't have two the same Skills in the same time (the page 13). I just replace 'Social Skills' of my first choice by 'Social Skills' of the Trickster Character Role.

TOTAL:

I have these Skills presently:

i. 'Dodging' (n/a (by default)
ii. 'Tempo' (n/a (by default)
iii. 'Perception' (n/a (by default)
iv. 'World Lore' (Trained based on a Cultural Background)
v. 'Stamina'! (Trained based on the Civilian Character Role)

xi. 'Climbing' (Trained based on the Trickster Character Role)
xii. 'Mechanics' (Trained based on the Trickster Character Role)
xiii. 'Social Skills' (Trained based on the Trickster Character Role)
xiv. 'Stealth' (Trained based on the Trickster Character Role)
xv. 'Trickery' (Trained based on the Trickster Character Role)

15 Trained Skills. Now it's not a Civilian character, but a complete Trickster character.

If you're confused with a fact I changed a Character Role from a Civilian to a Trickster. Yeah, this possibility is really restricted by rules (the page 11)! I know I can't change my Life Stance hence some Character Role. An occasion when your Life Stance under a risk to be changed is really unlikely in a game. Second way, you can lose your Character Role when you're not Noble more and your Character Role requires being Noble. It's not about a Trickster within this rule. Anyway, you can't lose your Noble status before a game. Even though, you want to convert a Civilian into a Berserk you can do it. Because you make a convert before a game starts! But when your hero is already putted into the MYFAROG World you can't change a Character Role as you please it from that moment.

Untrained skills can still be used.  Stamina has no penalty for being untrained so it is just 8 + con = SP

Untrained skills can still be used.  Stamina has no penalty for being untrained so it is just 8 + con = SP

Yes, you're right. When the 'Stamina" Skills is untrained you have +0 penalty from it. But! 

First of all, you need to add the 'Stamina' Skill in your Skills Set!!!! You can't add the 'Stamina' Skill just because you need it. It doesn't work in this way. It's possible that your character and his Character Role don't have 'Stamina' Skill at all. It means that when a game is started you're not even Exhausted, you're Unconscious permanently. It'll happen to you, because you don't have Stamina Points, because you don't have the 'Stamina' Skill. When I realised this strange gap in a generation process I also just found a way how to solve this problem.

No. You don't always have the 'Stamina' Skill by default. Some Cultural Backgrounds have 'Stamina' some don't. Some Character Roles have the 'Stamina' Skill some don't. It seems to me you have only the 'Dodging', 'Perception' and 'Tempo' by default only. 

Well, when you obtain Skills with your Cultural Background you have them as already Trained Skills (p.13 of MYFAROG v.2.7). What about Skills of Character Roles, so I understand it they don't have penalties. It's nothing about you have penalties from them there. They're just called 'Character Role Skills'. It's a separate category. Nevertheless, if Skills of Character Roles don't have penalties it means these kinds of Skills are already Trained for you. I understand it in this way. I also always give you proofs from the rule book to you see I don't make some decisions with rules without reasons. I don't try to change rules just because I want. I try to understand rules better within the original Game Mechanics.

Okay. Now, I can see why we don't understand each other. 🧐

🙏 Look. 1) When you generate your character you add two or three Skills basing on a Cultural Background. Those Skills are Trained. 2) Next, you add Trained Skills with a Character Role which you chosen. Those Skills of a Character Role are already Trained too. 

Now, you have 2 or 3 Skills + Skill Set of a Character Role. You can see that I have 15 Trained Skills as a hero who was born in Trôskenia and who is a Trickster. 

I marked those 15 Skills in my character sheet by green ticks (check out pictures below). So, I have them presently. 👌

❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️ But if you think that you have a rest of Skills as Untrained Skills with penalties 👉you make a mistake with it👈. 👉You don't have them in your list at all!👈 You're not able to use them. ❗️❗️❗️❗️❗️ 

Now, you started a game with your prepared Trickster character who has 15 Trained Skills without penalties. So, what happens with other Skills?

So, if you need to obtain other Skills you can add them only when you reach a New Experienced Level. 👉I repeat👈 it's possible only when you reach a New Experienced Level!

For example, you reached the Experienced Level 2. I, as a Myth Master, ask you.

'How do you want to improve your hero?'
You answered me 'I'd like to add a new Skill to my Skill Set. It's 'Navigation'.'
'Okay' I replied. 'Now, you can add 'Navigation' as the New Skill in your character sheet as the Untrained Skill. Also, you receive -2 penalties with your 'Navigation'.' 

And you add 'Navigation' with the penalties -2. It's done. 

After it, if you'd like to make your Untrained 'Navigation' into a Trained 'Navigation' to get rid of -2 penalty you need to reach one more New Experienced Level! When you reach the Experienced Level 3 then you're able to train your 'Navigation' or choose one more New Untrained Skill.

1. You have got a character sheet, for example.

2. You completely generated your hero. You're a Trickster. You added 15 Trained Skills without penalties in your list. 👉Remember, you don't have a rest of Skills as Untrained Skills or Trained Skills!👈 You don't have them. 🙅‍♂️

3. So, you reached the New Level 2. You'd like to add a New Skill in your Skill Set. Your choice is 'Navigation'. You added 'Navigation' as an Untrained Skill in your list.

4. So, you reached the New Level 3. You'd like to train your Untrained 'Navigation'. You did it. Now, you have 'Navigation' is Trained without the -2 penalty.

It happens exact in this way only.

1. You have got a character sheet, for example. 

So you are saying a skill can be:

* untrained (and not on your character sheet)

* untrained (and you have added it to your character sheet)

* trained

* character role

I understand this I just don't think that is how it works but I could be wrong on this.  The character sheet above even seems to suggest that any untrained you have, you may use, because it has already filled in the penalty for untrained.  Once you choose your class, you can check the box for if you have trained it, or gotten it from your character class.

But maybe you are right I just do not see it.  Even on p20 "Experience Points" it tells you how a level up works and say nothing about choosing an untrained skill to "add to your character sheet" - only about choosing to train an untrained skill.

I figure there is some logic to it I don't get or meant to place emphasis.  I encounter so many subtle hints in text that I notice but don't get I start to forget how many there are.

Such is the unseen.  If your mind isn't in the right frame of reference, it means you are not meant to see it.  As such, I find, I am meant to not see many things.  But some, I do.  Is this stupid? Who knows, we may never know.  99% of the time, I find to be knowing one prevents you from knowing another.

But maybe you are right I just do not see it.  Even on p20 "Experience Points" it tells you how a level up works and say nothing about choosing an untrained skill to "add to your character sheet" - only about choosing to train an untrained skill.

Well, yeah. There is nothing about you add Skills when you reach a New Level... If I'm not right with it and my understandable how it works is incorrect, so it means that your character has every Skill at the beginning...It seems to me it's too good for any character even if you have a rest of Skills as Untrained Skills. It means that you a healer, alchemist, poet, actor and you're able to heal, dance, ride, swim, read tracks, read runes, play musician instruments, assemble traps, etc at the same time. Some things you do badly, but you do. It's just too many for one person. Where do you see a person who knows how to do so many things? Do you know medicine yourself? Me don't. I can't swim, for example. But MYFAROG offers us a character who has been able to do all these things just since a time he/she is 15-16 year-old at least! Even if he/she is untrained in several Skills he's able to do it already. This idea is damn strange. Because of it, I made a suggestion that you don't have other Skills except those Skills you have from a Cultural Background and Character Role. Next, you can just obtain and add them in your Skill Set in a game. It looks more realistic. But, yeah, it looks like I understand this rule wrongly and you're right that a hero has all Skills at once. 

I just understood words 'Instead of gaining training in a new skill....' wrongly. I thought when you reach a New Level you add a New Skill as Untrained and since that moment you can  train that Untrained Skill. Why did I think in that way? Because 'Instead of gaining training in a new skill....'. New Skill is new when you add it for the first time, but when you have every Skill at the beginning of a game, so all Skills aren't new for you, because you have them all already. 



So, it looks like you're right I understand these words incorrectly. Okay! Anyway, maybe someone will use my method. If he/she wants to make their game more difficult and extreme (more realistic?), they may use it as an alternative way how to add Skills to improve heroes.

But I think they aren't filled as Untrained under the meaning you have all Skills (Trained and Untrained) already. I think that colon 'U' just shows you penalties of each Skill to make the character sheet more comfortable. Am I wrong?

I've played a lot of tabletops.  Most of them allow you to use an untrained skill.  A thulean may not have dancing but, anyone can dance.  May not have swimming but, babies can swim instinctively they forget about it later with their larger bodies if untrained but there is an instinct for each skill.  May not know how to heal a wound but, you know to try to stop the bleeding or wash it and sometimes that is enough.  That is why when you roll for untrained it has a penalty.  You may succeed possibly.  I think there is also a rule for getting xp on failures that isn't in the books somewhere on myfarog.org. So you could in theory get a xp by failing all these things.

I've played a lot of tabletops.  Most of them allow you to use an untrained skill.  A thulean may not have dancing but, anyone can dance.  May not have swimming but, babies can swim instinctively they forget about it later with their larger bodies if untrained but there is an instinct for each skill.  May not know how to heal a wound but, you know to try to stop the bleeding or wash it and sometimes that is enough.  That is why when you roll for untrained it has a penalty.  You may succeed possibly.  I think there is also a rule for getting xp on failures that isn't in the books somewhere on myfarog.org. So you could in theory get a xp by failing all these things.

Well...Your points of view about Skills looks good. It makes sense. Anyway, I think that if you're able to stop bleeding from a wound or wash a wound it doesn't mean you're a healer. Yeah, when you stop the bleeding or do primitive things to help yourself or another person it doesn't make you a healer. I take pills, I can stop the bleeding if I cut myself by a knife and what? I can't swim if I fall in water, I'll drown down to the bottom. If you give me a flute I'll make several ugly sounds and it'll be my best performance. I remember I tried to play an oboe. It's really difficult to just make a sound from an oboe. Each time when I tried to make a sound from an oboe I forcefully exhaled the air from my lungs to that oboe. I strained my abdomen and even my face to make a sound. Ha ha! It was interesting. Okay, I just think if you need to stop the bleeding you don't need to have knowledge about how to heal . Al right, now I see. Yeah, I just misunderstood how Skills work in MYFAROG, but I think I found one more interesting way to do it. I hacked MYFAROG . Well, everyone can use both these ways as they please.

By the way, maybe you know some way how to calculate a distance in a game without maps with squares or hexagons ? Making maps for each location will take a lot of time. I think it's irrational.

Oboe's have reeds and it takes a while to get used to them.  I think in Thule they are using the simple wooden flute or as they say in America a "recorder". I've come to appreciate simple instruments.  This sound, much like Burzum ambient albums. It is like a memory from long ago.
