My friends and I tried to play D&D on Tabletop sim a few years ago. I'm not sure what the updates were like over the years, but I remember it took a long time to set up the miniatures and it got too messy.
I think it's a good alternative to skype or discord if you just use the in game dice and your imagination.

I use a combination of Google Hangouts, Roll20, and Xsplit. The players just see the Hangouts and the Roll20, Xsplit is on my end just for recording the screen capture.

I've used Roll20 and Discord for games w/battle maps. I'm still on the fence between theater of the mind and figures. I would use a 2d battle map program over a 3d one just for ease/quickness of asset creation.

I actually don’t use Roll20 for the maps or moving icons around, I’ve almost never played a TT RPG, as a table top miniatures game with maps. I prefer role playing, seeing the players on screen, and throwing an image up from time-to-time. If Hangouts still has dice rolling app, I wouldn’t even bother with Roll20.
