An interesting idea occurred to me - the May King and May Queen ritual is quite similar to the idea of a Lich in Dungeons and Dragons, putting their soul in a receptacle and being invincible (unless touched with mistletoe) until it is destroyed. However, the May King and May Queen are still living beings and they are honored and cherished members of their communities.
....but what if an evil sorcerer altered and perverted the May King ritual to their own twisted ends? Perhaps Melech Ha Mashiach can achieve this by sending his cultists to Thule to steal the secret? Perhaps this is his ultimate plan, to become an immortal God King and plunge the lands into darkness?
Or, perhaps, a May King suffers a fate worse than death? Perhaps they are buried alive for years and when they are unearthed they would have aged past the point where they would have died. Yet, because their soul is not returned to their bodies, their corpse clings to a semblance of life.

That sounds like a pretty cool concept to me, Brian. Have you tried it out in any of your games yet? Rogue, evil sorcerers always make for good sessions. Something like a Wight King could be pretty interesting, especially during the Winter Darkness period.
