In the tribe of the Scalvians in Skanthan's Islands a new generation within a clan have come of age. These men of Thule have much work to do ahead of them. Their elders are set to retire from their own adventures and trials and give gifts to the young because they are about to embark on a mission for the tribe. They are accompanied by a guide named Gunderic, a free man chosen by the Nobles in the clan.
These brave Thuleans are to scout out three neighboring tribes whom haven't been heard from in several months. The normal fishermen, merchant boats and travelers haven't been showing up at port. This is causing alarm among the elders of the Skanthan Islands and several other tribes. The other men of the Scalvians and neighboring areas have already ventured out to the aid of other islands in their battles with a surge of Ettins in the east so the scouting task has come to these young adventurers.
Scalvian sorcerers cannot sense anything about this silence through contact with the spirits. It would seem the spirits are as ominous as the strange new weather clouds forming above the island. A growing unease has blanketed the tribe under the darkened skies. An eerie yellow is cast upon the cottages and huts of the community. Rumors of a plague arriving in Thule have not gone unnoticed but, few dare to speak of it, fearing they would invite it's arrival to the island.
In our group of heroes is an Elven Bard named Atrius, skilled with the Lyre and poetry. He is a Noble and weaves his songs with the spirit of the God SuwilaR. He has a twin sister who still lives with his parents. His father is off to sea with the others fighting the Ettins in the east.
Vadomar the Thulean native is a Berserker, an adopted child raised under the guardianship of the family of Atrius. His skin already bears the scars of his rough training even in youth. He is fierce and unmatched in combat among his peers. His parents were slain in the mainland long ago and they are 2nd cousins of Atrius' mother.
Leofwin is the cousin of Vadomar and is the best Stalker of the island. He knows the forests, swamps and shoreline better than anyone save a few of the elders. He has two brothers that are out on a hunting trip and may join the group in the future.
Within the tribal town of the Scalvians there is still trade going on amongst the elders, the common folk and the wives of those who have traveled overseas to fight. Children still play almost oblivious to the eerie facade about the land and folk. While the Skanthan Islands are one of the more 'primitive' of the Thulean tribes, it's a well-stocked area and plenty of food and goods are to be found this time of year.
One pleasant effect about the village is that a large collection of swans and ducks has made it's way near a stream in the village. The children are often found there playing with the occasional loud * squack * of an offended duck, when children get too close to them.
The story begins at the Elven home of Atrius. His mother is preparing him and Vadomar some things for their journey. Leofwin already has some gear prepared and has arranged the boat for travel with Gunderic who is at the pub having some beer and saying his farewells.
