Before I discovered Varg Vikernes's wonderful game and system MYFAROG, my go to system was and currently still is Deluxe Tunnels and Trolls. In the big DT&T book, there is a very intriguing solo adventure called Abyss. This is a solo adventure that requires one to play as a dead character, as they traverse this "alternate world" fighting for their very soul! Needless to say, this concept is inspired by old mythology. It got me thinking about how we could apply this thinking specifically for 1 on 1 games (A Myth Master and 1 player).
From studying and enjoying Varg's and his beautiful wife Marie Cachet's other books outside of this RPG, such as the Paganism Explained series, Sorcery and Religion in Ancient Scandinavia and The Secret of the She-Bear ; I'm starting to get a real sense of what the reincarnation process entails as it might relate to the mythical world of Thule'.
In addition to weaving/prepares a story and adventure for my player, once I learn about their life stance and during game learning about which deities they tend to favor or seek out, and getting a sense of "the path" their character is traveling on, I figure I could start weaving an adventure that will start after they have passed on. This adventure will still take place in Thule', but an alternate Thule' in which they can still visit, for example, loved ones although interaction with them could be very limited, depending on whether or not these loved ones are attuned to the spiritual realm. Depending on the circumstances of this character's death, their journey from this world into the next life can either be enlightening and a celebration of their life that they are passing on, which a few challenges thrown in OR it could be extremely macabre as they will have to fight to be reincarnated with the odds stacked heavily against them. They may even have to prove to the gods themselves, depending on their past crimes, that they are worthy of returning to this life and may be put to a trial!
In any case, in this alternate spirit realm and due to the ethereal fluctuations therein, use of sorcery can still work, but it's a 50/50 whether it will or not. This can be solved by simply rolling any dice and giving the player a range of numbers to shoot for. For example, "Roll a d4 and on a roll of 1 or 2, this spell has no effect. On a 3-4 it works, but the results of what you're used to may vary..." Yes, here's the thing too, it may work but it's not as dependable or efficient in this spiritual world as it was in the mortal one.
Apart from the sorcery aspect and the fact that you could only, for the most part, make psychical contact with entities/guides/other fallen from this realm; the other gameplay mechanics will remained unchanged.
Depending on the success of this meta-psychical and spiritual adventure, the character may be "reborn" into their next life with past memories/experiences intact, or at the very least a sense of "where they came from" with or without the benefits that could be gained through such knowledge OR lost and/or cursed by the gods/deities to suffer this new existence for varying periods of time, perhaps for the rest of time...
What do you guys think of this addition for a 1 on 1 game.? Even before getting into the swing of running my first game of MYFAROG, this system seems great for a 1 on 1 game. Perhaps one of the best systems I've studied for an immersive 1 on 1 experience. I would like to be able to tell a new player in death and depending on what they did in game and/or how they died, "Perhaps this isn't the end of YOUR journey!"
Any thoughts or ideas regarding this?
